TIBS EXCLUSIVE – Matt Le Tissier: “Özil & Fellaini are panic buys.”

Goalden Goals

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger got caught up in a bit of panic buying when he spent £42.5 million on Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Özil.

And I can’t understand why Manchester United boss David Moyes paid his old club Everton £27.5 million for Marouane Fellaini.

There is always a bit of an element of panic buying on the last day of the transfer deadline especially the big clubs who want to appease fans.

But the two biggest transfers involving Özil and Fellaini have surprised me in their own different ways.

Özil showed in 80 minutes against Sunderland on Saturday what a highly-talented player he is.

The German made the first goal for Olivier Giroud and generally gave a midfield master-class in the 3-1 win where his 79 passes had an accuracy rate of 89.9 per cent!

But it seems odd that Arsene Wenger would strengthen what was probably his strongest department in his team already.

Arsene was under pressure to buy in the transfer window because the fans’ expectations were high and nothing had been done until pretty much the last day.

But I cannot really see why Moyes signed Fellaini and paid over-the-odds for him.

I really struggle to see Fellaini as a Man Utd type player unless they are going to change their style of play to fit him into their side

It seems a lot of money especially as his buy-out clause was £23.5 million up until the end of July.

Now he’s ended up paying £4 million more for a player who might not fit into their style of play.
