French Open Day Seven round-up: Rafael Nadal battles past Britain’s Cameron Norrie to advance into the last 16

Rafael Nadal fought past a valiant Cameron Norrie in straight sets to advance into the fourth round of the tournament.

The Spaniard improved his record at Roland Garros to 103-2 following a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory after two hours and eight minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Next up for Nadal is Jannick Sinner and the pair will meet for a second successive year at the tournament after the Italian beat Mikael Ymer in straight sets.

Meanwhile, Norrie was the last Brit to fall in the tournament but despite defeat the 25-year-old heads into WImbledon on the verge of breaking into the world’s top 40.

Following the match Norrie said: “I thought I played great but I don’t think I took enough risk.

“I returned well to get up a break in the second set, but I think I could have played a little bit more aggressive, especially serve and my first ball.

“When I broke he came back in the next game in a different level, in a different energy.”

“I’m moving well, I’m physically in great shape, all in all, I competed well and was happy with my attitude and I want to take that into the grass court season.”

Should Djokovic overcome that hurdle the World No.1 could meet his familiar foe Roger Federer in the quarter-finals after the Swiss battled hard to progress past Dominik Koepfer.

Federer was pushed to three tiebreaks in the match, winning two and losing one before eventually securing a 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory in the latest finish ever at the French Open.

However, in order to have a chance of creating a clash with Djokovic, the Swiss will have to progress past Matteo Berrettini who cruised past Kwon Soo-Woo in straght sets.

Another Top Seed stumbles in the Women’s Draw

Elina Svitolina became the seventh of the top ten seeds to crash out of the French Open after suffering a shock 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Barbora Krejcikova.

While, the fourth seed Sofia Kenin had to battle back from a set down to avoid the same fate and remain the highest remaining seed in the tournament.

Kenin was victorious in the all-American clash with Jessica Pegula taking one hour and 58 minutes to secure a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win.

Reigning champion, Iga Swiatek was also made to work hard for her victory recovering from a break down in the first set before marching to a straight sets victory over Anett Kontaveit.

Elsewhere, Sloane Stephens caused another upset by defeating the 18th seed Karolina Muchova in straight sets.

While, the 14th seed Elise Mertens exited the tournament following a 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2 defeat to Maria Sakkari
