French Open Day Four round-up: Daniil Medvedev survives a scare before reaching the third round

Daniil Medvedev came back from a set down to defeat Tommy Paul 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 in the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Coming into the tournament, the World No 2 had never won at Roland Garros but has so far managed to put aside his troubles on clay to advance into the third round of the tournament.

Paul started brightly, hitting the shot of the tournament so far with a ball around the net post for a winner in the first game of the match before taking the first set.

However, Medvedev rallied to win the next three sets to confirm a spot in the next round after two hours and 17 minutes.

The Russian is now set to face the big-serving Reilly Opelka after the American overcame Jaume Munar in four sets.

Medvedev leads their head-to-head 2-1 but all three of their matches have gone to a decisive final set and Opelka won their most recent encounter in St. Petersburg.

Top seeds triumph

There were no such troubles for the other big names in the draw as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Fabio Fognini and Casper Ruud all progressed safely through in straight sets.

Elsewhere, 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta came back from a set down to go through but fellow Spaniard and 11th seed Roberto Bautista Agut went out in four sets against Henri Laaksonen.

Yet, the standout performance came from Kei Nishikori as the Japanese player won in five sets for a second-successive match to knock out 23rd seed Karen Khachanov.

Women’s draw

Serena Williams was pushed to a decisive third set by Mihaela Buzarnescu before eventually battling through 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 to maintain her push for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam.

The third seed Aryna Sabalenka had less trouble reaching the next round as she defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight-sets.

Victoria Azarenka also progressed with ease after overcoming Clara Tauson 7-5, 6-4 on Court Simonne Mathieu.

However, the 10th seed Belinda Bencic was the big name casualty as she lost was comfortably beaten in straight-sets by Daria Kasatkina.
