French Open Day Five round-up: Cameron Norrie sets up third-round showdown with Rafael Nadal

Britain’s Cameron Norrie reached the third round of the French Open for the first time in his career with a comeback victory over Lloyd Harris.

The last Brit standing in the tournament took two hours and 18 minutes to come from a set down and defeat Harris 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 on Court 11.

The victory sets up his third meeting with Rafael Nadal, all of which have come in this calendar year.

Norrie has been unsuccessful in both previous encounters against the 20-time Grand Slam champion and has yet to take a single set against the Spaniard.

However, despite his record against Nadal, Norrie believes he has learned a lot from their previous encounters.

Norrie said: ‘I’ve learned that he’s actually a human being.

‘I’ve played him twice in Australia and in Barcelona, so I definitely know how he plays and he knows how I play but I’m just going to look to bring my game and I’m looking forward to take it to him again.

‘He can miss shots, he can play short at times but then you give him a little bit of room and he can be extremely dangerous.

‘It can be absolute carnage going into the forehand but I think, especially with my backhand, I can do a lot of damage.

‘I’m not going to give too much away, I just need to focus on what I’ve been doing well and go and try and execute and leave it all out on the court.

‘I feel great physically and I’d back my legs against anyone, even against Rafa but I’m going to have to execute, and it’s not going to be easy.’

Nadal on course for a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam

Nadal celebrated his 35th birthday with a victory over Richard Gasquet in the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Nadal moved to 17-0 against Gasquet by defeating the Frenchman 6-0, 7-5, 6-2, in two hours and 14 minutes.

Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic also cruised into the third round with a straight-sets victory over Pablo Cuevas.

Roger Federer was also in action and was forced to a fourth set by Marin Cilic before eventually overcoming the Croatian 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Fellow top seeds, Matteo Berrettini, Diego Schwartzman and Jannick Sinner all also progressed into the next round.

While, Mikael Ymer downed the home favourite and 14th seed Gael Monfils 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Top Seed Ashleigh Barty withdraws injured

The World No 1 Ashleigh Barty retired from her match midway through the second set due to injury.

Her opponent Magda Linette led 6-1, 2-2 before the Australian withdrew from the match due to a problem with her left hip.

After the match Barty said: ‘It’s heartbreaking, we have had such a brilliant clay court season.

‘We did everything, absolutely everything we could to give myself a chance. It was a small miracle that we were able to get on the court for the first round.

‘It is disappointing to have something acute happen over the weekend and just run out of time to recover but as much as it hurts right now, it won’t take away the brilliant three months that we have had.’

Women’s draw opens up for the rest of the field

Barty’s withdrawal means that the top two seeds in the draw are no longer in the tournament but the fourth seed Sofia Kenin and the fifth seed Elina Svitolina managed to sail through with simple straight-set victories.

Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek continued her quest for a second consecutive French Open title with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rebecca Peterson in just 61 minutes.

However, the ninth seed Karolina Pliskova had no such luck as she was convincingly beaten 7-5, 6-1 by Sloane Stephens.
