Manchester United and Chelsea have the prospect of Champions League football next season to look forward to after finishing inside the top four on the final day of an exciting Premier League season.

Going into the last games of the season, United sat third (63 points), Chelsea fourth (63 points) and Leicester fifth (62 points).

Manchester United knew a win or a draw would secure a top-four spot at Leicester City – with the latter knowing only a win would secure their spot.

Meanwhile, Chelsea needed only a point at home to high-flying Wolves to finish inside the top four.

And by half-time, the Blues looked in cruise control as they scored twice before the interval to take a two-goal lead through a Mason Mount free-kick and an Olivier Giroud finish.

It was goalless at half-time at the King Power Stadium but the deadlock was broken on 71 minutes when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to give United the lead after Anthony Martial was fouled inside the penalty area.

Leicester’s task was made harder later on when former United centre back Jonny Evans was sent off for a wild challenge on Scott McTominay. Then in injury time substitute put the game beyond doubt with a simple finish to make it 2-0.

That scoreline was matched in west London as Chelsea held out to win 2-0 against Wolves.

As a result of both games, Manchester United finished third on 66 points – ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea via goal difference. Leicester City finished fifth on 62 points – a disappointing finish to their campaign considering they had occupied a top-four spot for the majority of it.
