Scotland have qualified for next summer’s delayed Euros, their first major tournament since 1998, after beating Serbia in dramatic fashion on penalties.

Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall was the hero as he dramatically saved Aleksandar Mitrovic’s spot-kick in the shootout to book their place at Euro 2020.

Scotland took the lead early into the second half as Ryan Christie was able to find some space on the edge of the box, shifting the ball onto his left foot and finding the bottom right-hand corner.

It looked like the game was won but just two minutes from time Luka Jovic rose highest from a corner to equalise with a header.

It was a crushing blow to Scotland manager Steve Clarke who had taken off key personnel in Lyndon Dykes, John McGinn and Christie just before Serbia’s dramatic leveller.

In stoppage time it looked like Serbia had taken the lead when a shot flew in from 25- yards towards the bottom left-hand corner, but Marshall was equal to it as he managed to get a vital fingertip to the powerful Serbian strike.

Throughout the whole of extra-time it seemed as if Scotland had lost their spark after suffering the demoralising last-minute equaliser, but they held on to take the game to penalties.

In the shootout, all five Scotland takers were able to confidently find the net before Marshall was able to deny Mitrovic with a big left hand keeping the ball firmly away from Scotland’s net.

Scotland find themselves in Group D for the Euros alongside England, Croatia and the Czech Republic. The latter two games will be played at Hampden Park, while they will travel south to take on their Auld Enemy at Wembley.

Clarke’s men are now nine games unbeaten, their best run in 44 years, and will be looking to continue this impressive form come June.
