Aston Villa avoid relegation as Watford and Bournemouth are relegated on the final day of the Premier League season

Football

Dean Smith has managed to keep Aston Villa in the Premier League after drawing 1-1 with West Ham.

It was nervous final day for Smith, whose late father was a Villa fan and club steward, as Bournemouth beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison.

Had his team lost in London then they would have gone down!

Watford played well against Arsenal but they got off to an awful start when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored an early penalty after VAR judged that Craig Dawson had fouled Alexandre Lacazette.

The game at the Emirates finished 3-2 after the Gunners led 3-0 – The result meant that Watford dropped to 19th and are heading back to the Championship.

Both the Cherries and the Hornets came up together in 2015 and had managed to stay in the top flight for four seasons.

It will be interesting to see if the clubs can keep hold of their star players and Watford’s first job is to appoint a new permanent manager.

Watford are currently on their eighth head coach (temporary and permanent) since that promotion in 2015 – Whereas Eddie Howe is still in charge of Bournemouth since taking them up in that same season.

They join Norwich who had already been relegated earlier this month after just one season back in the Premier League.
