The opening weekend of the Six Nations didn’t disappoint in terms of a spectacle, as our review detailed. But which players in particular excelled? TIBS News picks out three who did…
Ireland 29-7 Wales – Mack Hansen (Ireland)
Ireland kicked off the 2022 Six Nations with a thumping victory over champions Wales. Irish debutant Mack Hansen was in impeccable form to help the home side claim a bonus-point victory.
He was inspired by coach Andy Farrell who vowed for him to ‘be himself’ while making his debut for the Irish team.
The winger made over an extraordinary 100 meters in his first international start and was critical for Ireland’s first try after two minutes as he assisted Bundee Aki, who slid into the corner to score.
Hansen continued to threaten the Welsh back line throughout the contest as he tried on several occasions to break the gainline and hurt their defence.
With the injury to James Lowe, Hansen really took his opportunity and even left the Aviva Stadium with the man of the match award. As debuts go, they don’t get much better than this.
Scotland 20-17 England – Matt Fagerson (Scotland)
It is always a fierce 80 minutes when these two lock horns in the Six Nations as Scotland edged past England in a thrilling encounter.
England dominated possession and territory throughout the game, and it was a testament to the home side’s defence that they went on to win. A huge part of that was down to the impressive Matt Fagerson after his heroic all-round performance.
In defence he was strong in the tackle – completing 13 and not missing one. With these tackles he contributed to his side beating the ‘auld enemy’ and keeping them at bay. In attack, he completed 32m with his eight running attempts helping retain possession for the home side and drive them up the pitch. His man of the match performance helped the Scottish team retain the Calcutta Cup.
There must be a special mention for England fly-half Marcus Smith too who scored all his of their 17 points in an encouraging performance. The young Harlequins player massively structured the majority of England’s attacks as well as scored a brilliant try for the away side. He was 100 per cent from the boot with several penalties and a conversion. An exceptional flair player who is in fine form for his club and country.
France 37-10 Italy – Gabin Villiere (France)
In a game which should have been straightforward for the French side, it was made awkward by a resilient Italian team. However, Les Bleus were spurred on by winger Gabin Villiere as he scored a hat-trick of tries as France outclassed the away side by the full-time whistle.
Villiere demanded the ball and ventured forward into the Italian 22 on numerous occasions as he looked to put points on the board for his side.
He weaved in and out of defenders as he tormented the opposition – contributing to just under half of all the hosts’ points as he shone in Paris.
