There will be another representative from west London in the Premier League next season. The question is though, who will it be?
After a season like no other, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Championship season will finally come to a conclusion on Tuesday night when Brentford face local rivals Fulham in the play-off final at Wembley.
Both teams came close to automatic promotion but were pipped by champions Leeds United and runners-up West Bromwich Albion with Brentford finishing third and Fulham fourth.
Brentford overturned a 1-0 deficit to Swansea City from their semi-final first leg to win the return counter 3-1 to progress 3-2 on aggregate. Fulham, in contrast, were made to sweat against Cardiff City. After winning the first leg 2-0 in south Wales, Fulham lost 2-1 at home but prevailed 3-2 on aggregate too.
Not a lot separates the two teams, despite beating Fulham home and away (1-0 on December 12, 2019 and 0-2 on June 20, 2020) Brentford only finished above the Cottagers on goal difference – and that was via one goal.
