Lewis Hamilton enhanced his Formula One legacy on Sunday by becoming the most victorious driver in the sport’s history following his 92nd career win.

The 35-year-old achieved the feat at the Portuguese Grand Prix with a near-flawless display in his Mercedes.

The Brit has surpassed German legend Michael Schumacher’s tally of 91 F1 career wins – a total he had equalled at the Eifel Grand Prix earlier this month.

Hamilton is closing in on becoming a seven-time F1 world champion too, a record that is currently held by Schumacher.

His victory here moved him 77 points clear of team-mate Valtteri Bottas with just 130 points to play for. Bottas finished second at the Portuguese Grand Prix – 25.5 seconds behind Hamilton.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished third ahead of the Ferrari driver of Charles Leclerc at Portimao.

Hamilton, who shared a long embrace with his father Anthony afterwards, was overcome with emotiion at his accomplishment.

‘It is going to take some time to fully sink in. I cannot find the words at the moment,’ he said.

‘My dad is here, which is amazing, and my step-mum Linda too and my dog Roscoe so it is a blessed day.

‘I could have only ever dreamed of being where I am today. didn’t have a magic ball when I came to Mercedes but here I am and as a team we are trying to make the most of it.’
