Iga Swiatek wins French Open final after straight-sets win over Sofia Kenin

Iga Swiatek made history on Saturday by becoming the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam title following her French Open final victory over Sofia Kenin.

The 19-year-old went into the showpiece without having dropped a set during the tournament and she continued that once more with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over Australian Open champion Kenin.

At 54 in the world, Swiatek is the lowest-ranked woman ever to win the French Open and the second unseeded champion in four years after Jelena Ostapenko in 2017. She is also the youngest Roland Garros winner since Monica Seles in 1992.

“I don’t know what is going on, I’m so happy,” a smiling Swiatek said post-match.

‘It is crazy. Two years ago I won a junior Grand Slam and now I’m here,’ added Swiatek, who was laughing before her voice cracked with emotion.

‘I wasn’t expecting to win this trophy. It’s obviously amazing for me. It’s a life-changing experience.

‘I just feel like I kind of made history.’
