England crowned Six Nations champions thanks to bonus-point win over Italy as France beat Ireland

England have won the Six Nations title for the first time since 2017 after an eventful delayed ‘Super Saturday’.

Going into the final round of fixtures, which were originally scheduled in March but moved due to the coronavirus pandemic, England, France and Ireland could all win the competition.

England travelled to Rome to play Italy at the Stadio Olimpico knowing a bonus-point victory was needed to put them in contention.

And Eddie Jones’ side duly delivered that with a 34-5 triumph courtesy of tries from Jamie George, Tom Curry, Henry Slade and a brace from Ben Youngs – who won his 100th cap during the match. Captain and fly-half Owen Farrell kicked an additional nine points.

That meant England had to wait for the outcome of France versus Ireland in the evening.

Ireland, who would have taken the crown if they had beaten France by six points or more, led 10-7 at one point.

However, France took control to win in Paris but needed a bonus point and a winning margin of 31 points or more to claim the Six Nations themselves.

But sadly for they were unable to win by a large enough margin as England took the title on points difference.

Meanwhile, in the early game on Saturday. Scotland celebrated a Six Nations win in Wales for the first time in 18 years with a 14-10 victory in Llanelli.
