Dustin Johnson rewrote the record books at Augusta as he stormed to a maiden Masters victory.

The world No 1 took the green jacket with a record-breaking low score of 20 under par after a four-under par final round of 68 on Sunday.

The American, who becomes the first world No 1 to win the tournament since Tiger Woods in 2002, finished five strokes ahead of Australia’s Cameron Smith and South Korea’s Sungjae Im.

World No 3 Justin Thomas finished fourth at 12 under par, while Rory McIlroy’s wait for a Masters victory continues as he could only finish fifth at 11 under par.

Woods, who went into the tournament as the defending champion, could only finish one under par.

And it Woods’ record that Johnson broke at Augusta. In 1998, Woods recorded the lowest winning score of 18 under par – a total that Jordan Spieth also matched in 2015.

Speaking about his victory, Johnson hailed it as a dream come true.

‘It’s hard. I was nervous all day. I could feel it,” said Johnson, who will defend his title in five months’ time when the Masters returns to its usual spot in April.

‘The Masters is for me the biggest tournament and the one I wanted to win the most. I am just very proud of the way I handled myself and finished off the tournament.

‘It still feels like a dream. As a kid, I was dreaming about winning the Masters and having Tiger put the Green Jacket on you still feels like a dream.

‘But I am here and what a great feeling it is. I could not feel more excited.’
