Daniil Medvedev upset world No 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to become the first Russian to qualify for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals since Nikolay Davydenko in 2009.

In their second round-robin match of the tournament, Medvedev outplayed Djokovic at his own defensive game – consistently repelling the Serbian’s aggressive shots to draw frustration and rushed play from the top seed.

Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic struggled on his service games throughout the match, having to save four break points early on before eventually falling behind with a loose forehand on break point at 3-3.

Medvedev, 24, went on to break Djokovic in three consecutive service games and take full control of the match.

The Russian was very rarely troubled on his serve and wasn’t broken during the match only facing one break point against the Serb – who is renowned for his outstanding returns.

Djokovic grew more and more frustrated as the match went on, unable hit winners or force errors from Medvedev, leading him to attempt several drop shots that were also ineffective as he fell to defeat.

Following the match Medvedev was pleased with his game plan: ‘Of course, [I am] really happy to beat him. I was serving good and playing safe enough in the most important moments. That is why I got the win. I am feeling good [and] confident right now.’

However, Medvedev admitted he was fortunate to come up against a lacklustre Djokovic adding: ‘To be completely honest, I am sure he didn’t play his best today. But still, it happens for everybody, it is still tough to beat them, even on their bad days.’

The top seed has tended performed poorly, compared to his usual high standards, in his second round-robin matches at the season ending tournament. He now has a record of 6-7 in his second round-robin matches at the ATP Finals.

He will face Alexander Zverev on Saturday in the decisive match of Group Tokyo 1970 after the German kept his hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals alive with a three-set victory over Diego Schwartzman in the evening match.

Schwartzman, who is eliminated, will play for pride against Medvedev who will be looking to finish the group strongly and keep momentum heading into the semi-finals.
