Australian Open Day Two round-up: Rafael Nadal safely through as Roberto Bautista-Agut and David Goffin crash out of the tournament

Rafael Nadal put aside his injury worries as he sealed a straight-sets win over Laslo Djere.

The Spaniard withdrew from an ATP Cup match last week due to a stiff lower back but managed to seal his spot in the next round of the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 52 minutes.

Despite the win Nadal remains unsure whether he will be able challenge for a record 21st Grand Slam: ‘I don’t know if I’ll be able to fight for the title, my back is not perfect as I said a couple of days ago.

‘Every day that I’m able to go through is a day to hopefully improve, that is why I’m here playing and fighting to try and get better and then give myself a chance I just need to go day-by-day and try to stay positive.’

Fellow Spaniard and 12th seed Roberto Bautista-Agut did not have the same fate as he crashed out in the first round of the tournament against world No 85 Radu Albot.

The 32-year-old Spaniard won the first set via a tie-break, but was stunned by his Moldovan opponent who bagelled him the following set before taking the match 6-7 (1-7), 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in three hours and 15 minutes.

Australian wildcard Alexei Popyrin was also able to cause an upset by defeating the 13th seed David Goffin in five-set battle on 1573 Arena.

Goffin had four match points in the fourth set to seal his passage into round two but his opponent was inspired by the home-crowd to twice come from a set down and win the match in five sets.

There were no such troubles for the other top seeds with Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev and Fabio Fognini all cruising through into the next round with straight-set victories over their respective first round opponents.
