Tokyo Olympics: Team GB’s women’s football team re-unite for the Olympics

It is only the second time that that Team GB have entered a women’s team for the Olympics.

In 2016, the four nations failed to reach an agreement for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Fortunately this time things all the Football Associations could agree which means they get to play in Japan.

The team qualified thanks to England finishing fourth at the 2019 World Cup.

The only other time they featured in the completion they were knocked out of the quarter-finals after losing 2-0 against Canada.

Team GB’s first game will start against Chile in Sapporo tomorrow.

The players have also announced that they are planning on taking the knee before their games.

Format

There will be 12 different nations competing in round-robin competition followed by the knockout stage.

Unlike the men’s competition there are no restrictions relating to players over the age of 23.

The top two teams go through from the three groups as well as the top two third-place finishers which means Team GB should have no issue progressing.

The quarter-finals take place on Friday 30 July , with the semi-finals on Monday 2 August and the final is on Friday 6 August. Also the unwanted Bronze medal match is in Thursday 5 August.

Matches

Team GB face Chile, who are ranked 37th in the world, first in Sapporo before coming up against the hosts on Saturday 24 July. The final game sees them come up against two-time bronze medallists Canada in Kashima.

The original 18-payer squad was made up of 15 players from England, two from Scotland and one from Wales but none from Northern Ireland.

Key Players

Team GB’s star players are Ftran Kirby who was named WSL Player of the Year and the talented Lucy Bronze who won the Fifa Best player of 2020.

Arsenal’s recent signing Mana Iwabuchi will represent hosts Japan.

When Team GB come up against Canada they will have to watch out for veteran Christine Sinclair who is the all-time top scorer in international football.

Brazil legends Marta and Formiga will once again represent their country with Dutch boasting Barcelona’s Lieke Martens and Arsenal striker Vivanne Miedema.

Sam Kerr will take a break from Chelsea to captain Australia and Sweden’s key player is Magda Eriksson.

The USA squad go into the competition as favourites again with Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe looking for more glory.
