Tokyo Olympics: Your sport-by-sport schedule and guide to this summer’s Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games start on Wednesday 21 July with woman’s football and softball kicking off the 33rd summer Games.

There will be 33 different sports with 339 medals on offer with 42 different venues being used.

The first medals will be presented on Saturday 24 July – the day after the opening ceremony.

The competition will end on Sunday 8 August with the closing ceremony taking place the same day.

On the penultimate day there will 34 golds available with the first gold will be for the women’s 10m air rifle competition on Saturday 24 July.

The final medal will be awarded to the winners of the men’s water polo final on Sunday 8 August.

Aptly named ‘Super Saturday’ on 31 July is going to feature 21 medal events while ‘Golden Sunday’ the following day has 25 up for grabs.

Cyclists Jason and Laura Kenny are looking to become Britain’s most successful Olympians of all time.

Jason has six gold medals and one more medal to overtake Sir Chris Hoy, while his wife Laura has four golds and has the possibility of finishing the Olympics with seven.

New Sports

This year we welcome five new sports to the Olympics which include baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

Baseball and softball return to the Olympics having last appeared in 2008 in Beijing.

Two new disciplines have been added within existing sports – 3×3 basketball and BMX freestyle as well as new mixed team events in athletics, archery, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis and triathlon.
