Tottenham sign striker Carlos Vinicius on season-loan from Benfica as Jose Mourinho bolsters his attacking options

Tottenham have ended their search for a new striker following the arrival of Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica.

The 25-year-old Brazilian, who was joint top goalscorer in Portugal’s Primeira Liga last season with 18 goals in 32 matches, will stay with Spurs for the full campaign.

Vinicius’ move means Tottenham finally have another forward on their books to ease the workload on Harry Kane, something they have been without since Fernando Llorente left the club last summer.

Boss Jose Mourinho has been desperate to sign a striker this summer, having been unable to do so in January, and will be delighted he has secured his main target.

It is understood Spurs were interested in Vinicius for much of the transfer window but have only been able to strike a deal after circumstances at Benfica changed.

Spurs will pay a £2.69million loan fee and have the option of buying Vinicius for £40.38m at the end of the season.

Vinicius started his senior career at Caldense in Brazil, making his first-team debut in March 2017, before a transfer to Gremio Anapolis preceded his move to Europe.

His form for Portuguese side Real Sport Clube secured a move to Napoli in 2018, with loan spells at Rio Ave and Monaco before a move to Benfica in July 2019.

In an interview on Spurs’ Twitter account, Vinicius said: ‘I wanted to say to everyone that together we’ll taste success.

‘I’m here to join this family to share your joy and bring home silverware.’
