USA regain the Ryder Cup after an emphatic 19-9 victory over Europe at Whistling Straits

The Ryder Cup is back in possession of Team USA after they cruised to victory over Europe at the 43rd edition of the prestigious trophy.

Playing on home soil, the pre-tournament favourites met expectation as they dominated from start to finish across Friday-Sunday to win 19-9 at Whistling Straits.

The hosts led 6-2 after Friday’s foursomes and fourballs sessions, and extended that to a record 11-5 on Saturday to leave themselves needing to win just three-and-a-half points out of the 12 available in Sunday’s singles.

And they achieved that feat in just the fifth singles match as Open champion Collin Morikawa claimed the winning half point Steve Stricker’s side needed.

Steve Stricker delighted with his Team USA

‘This is a special day for everyone here involved,’ said Stricker, who struggled to keep his emotions in check.

‘The Ryder Cup means a lot to everybody, your side and our side. We finally put in a dominant performance.

‘This is a new era right here, they are young, motivated, they came here determined to win.

‘I never won a major. But this is my major.’

A disappointing weekend for Team Europe

For Europe only Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter emerged victorious on Sunday but it was a weekend to forget for the men in blue.

Europe captain Padraig Harrington conceded: ‘It’s a tough loss, but they were better than us. They were a strong team and played on their best form. They had momentum the whole time.’

The margin of victory eclipses the 18½-9½ successes enjoyed by Europe in 2004 and 2006 and America’s own triumph in 1981.

The next Ryder Cup is scheduled to be held in Rome, Italy in 2023, which will be 30 years since the US last won an away match
