The Easter weekend of Premier League action is now over with plenty of entertaining encounters being played over the last few days, including a dominant Liverpool win and a shock defeat for Chelsea.
Manchester City took on Leicester in the biggest match of the weekend, coming out 2-0 winners to extend their lead at the top of the table. Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus netted for Pep Guardiola’s side who briefly moved 17 points clear in first place.
The other high-profile game saw Liverpool dispatch Arsenal by winning 3-0 at the Emirates to move within two points of the top four.
A rejuvenated Trent Alexander-Arnold helped the Reds to victory, setting up Diogo Jota’s opener which was added to by Mohamed Salah and then Jota again to round off the scoring.
The Reds could capitalise on the points dropped by fourth placed Chelsea who were the victims of a 5-2 thrashing by West Brom.
Chelsea thumped at home by West Bromwich Albion
Despite Christian Pulisic putting Thomas Tuchel’s team ahead, they were outdone by a red card for Thiago Silva followed by two quick Matheus Pereira goals. The Baggies added to their lead in the second half, scoring twice through Callum Robinson and once through Mbaye Diagne as they condemned the Blues to their first defeat under the new manager.
Fellow top-four challengers Tottenham also dropped points, drawing 2-2 with Newcastle United. Joelinton and on-loan Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock scored for Newcastle, either side of a Harry Kane brace.
Manchester United took advantage of those around them dropping points to consolidate second in the league, coming from behind to beat Brighton 2-1. All three goals were scored by United academy graduates, with Danny Welbeck finishing for Brighton before Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood netted for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Similarly, West Ham picked up all three points in their 3-2 win over Wolves to move back into the top four. Goals from Jesse Lingard, Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen were enough to see the Hammers return to the Champions League places despite Leander Dendoncker and Fabio Silva also scoring.
Another club in the mix for European football are Everton, who could only manage a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.
James Rodriguez put the Toffees ahead, but a late equaliser from Michy Batshuayi meant the points were shared at Goodison Park.
Down at the bottom
Elsewhere, Fulham’s hopes of survival took a blow when they were beaten 3-1 by Aston Villa. The returning Aleksandar Mitrovic put the Cottagers ahead, but two late strikes from Trezeguet and a tap in for Ollie Watkins sealed all three points for Villa.
Sheffield United also suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Yorkshire rivals Leeds, losing 2-1 to Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Ben Osborn initially equalised after Jack Harrison’s opener, but a Phil Jagielka own goal handed the Blades their 24th loss of the season.
Finally, Southampton’s fears of being dragged into a late relegation battle were eased when they came from behind to beat Burnley 3-2. Early finishes from Chris Wood and Matej Vydra were undone by goals from Stuart Armstrong, Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond as the Saints moved 10 points clear of the bottom three.
