Champions League quarter-final review: Manchester City and Chelsea reach semi-finals but Liverpool crash out to Real Madrid

The 2021 Champions League quarter-finals are over and we now have the last four that will take part in the semi-finals at the end of this month.

Manchester City win in Germany

Manchester City beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 for the second time in the last eight days to book their place in the next round.

Jude Bellingham became Dortmund’s youngest-ever Champions League goalscorer but second-half strikes from Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden put City into their first European semi-final under Pep Guardiola.

They will play against Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Chelsea lose second leg but still progress

Chelsea got to their first Champions League semi-final since 2014 after their 2-1 aggregate win over Porto.

The first-leg victory was enough to see the Blues through, even though Mehdi Taremi netted a stunning late overhead kick this time out.

They will play Real Madrid in the next round.

Real Madrid knock out Liverpool

This comes after Madrid held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield in the second leg of their tie.

Zinedine Zidane’s side came into the match with a 3-1 lead over the Reds and managed to keep them out in the reverse fixture despite a defence missing Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

Madrid qualified for their first European semi-final since 2018 and will prepare for their tie against Chelsea in the semi-finals.

Paris Saint-Germain dump out holders Bayern Munich

Current holders of Europe’s most prestigious trophy, Bayern Munich crashed out of the competition following their aggregate loss to PSG.

Despite winning 1-0 in the second leg through another Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting goal, Hansi Flick’s side were eliminated on away goals.

The tie finished 3-3, with Mauricio Pochettino’s team advancing to the next round and making the manager’s first Champions League semi-final since the 2019 season when he was in charge of Tottenham.
