Southampton secured their spot in the FA Cup semi-finals with a dominate 3-0 win at Bournemouth as Nathan Redmond scored twice and assisted Moussa Djenepo at the Vitality Stadium.
The Saints started the south-coast derby the better and had an early goal disallowed for offside on 10 minutes. Jan Bednarek played a long ball into right back Kyle Walker-Peters whose cross was turned into his own net by Cameron Carter-Vickers. However, his blushes were spared as VAR intervened and deemed there was an offside in the build-up to the goal.
That didn’t halt Southampton’s momentum and they came close to scoring through Ryan Bertrand just four minutes later. It was good play by Stuart Armstrong who got to the byline and cut the ball back for Bertrand who dragged his shot well wide of the post.
It wasn’t until midway in the first half that Bournemouth truly threatened the Southampton goal. Arnaut Danjuma was played in down the right-hand side and saw his near-post shot well-saved by Fraser Forster.
Southampton take the lead
The breakthrough finally did come through on 37 minutes though as Djenepo put the visitors in front. It was great work by Redmond who drove at the Bournemouth defence from the halfway line before playing in Djenepo to calmly slot the ball into the far corner of Asmir Begovic’s goal.
On the stroke of half-time Redmond doubled the Saints lead when he was given the ball on the halfway line again and drove at Bournemouth’s defence before finishing into the top left-hand corner from outside the box.
Jack Wilshire almost got Bournemouth back into the game at the start of the second half but his powerful shot from the edge of the box narrowly missed the top corner.
The Saints put the game to bed on 59 minutes when Redmond grabbed his second. Che Adams smashed a shot from the outside of the box against the post which fortunately fell to the winger who finished into the bottom right corner.
Bournemouth had a few chances towards the end of the game but could not convert as Southampton dominated the ball and saw out the game to win 3-0.
What’s next for the Saints?
The win means that the Saints visit Wembley for the second time in four years but will hope that the result will be a different one to their 2-0 defeat by Chelsea who they could face again this time around.
