The return of Champions League football didn’t disappoint, with varying success for some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored on his return to the competition with Manchester United, but it wasn’t enough as the Red Devils went on to lose 2-1 to BSC Young Boys.
Right back Aaron Wan Bissaka was sent off in the first half, and goals after the break from Moumi Ngamaleu and Jordan Siebatcheu handed the Swiss side victory.
The loss left United bottom of Group F, after Villareal and Atalanta drew 2-2.
Manu Trigueros and Arnaut Danjuma netted for the Spaniards, while Remo Freuler and Robin Gosens scored for Atalanta.
Holders off to a winning start
Current holders Chelsea fared a lot better as they began their Champions League defence, beating Zenit St. Petersburg 1-0.
Romelu Lukaku scored his first European goal for the club late on to get the Blues off to a good start in Group H.
The other fixture in their group saw Juventus beat Malmo 3-0, with strikes from Alex Sandro, Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata handing Massimiliano Allegri’s side the win.
Liverpool come from behind
Liverpool had a memorable match as they welcomed supporters back for another European night at Anfield as they came from behind to beat AC Milan 3-2.
The Reds went ahead through a Fikayo Tomori own goal. But, they found themselves behind at half-time after Brahim Diaz and Ante Rebic’s goals.
Second half strikes from Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson sealed the comeback for Liverpool. They went top of Group B – ahead of Atletico Madrid and Porto who drew 0-0.
City hammer RB Leipzig
The final English club, Manchester City, were involved in a dramatic 6-3 game against RB Leipzig in Group A.
Despite Christopher Nkunku scoring a hat-trick, strikes from Nathan Ake, Riyad Mahrez, Jack Grealish, Joao Cancelo, Gabriel Jesus and a Nordi Mukiele own goal sent City to the top of their group.
Competition favourites PSG didn’t start as well despite Lionel Messi making his debut! They drew 1-1 against Club Brugge.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich dominated against a lacklustre Barcelona side, winning 3-0 in Group E.
Robert Lewandowski scored twice alongside a Thomas Muller goal. The Polish striker has now scored in every competitive club game since February.
A 0-0 stalemate was played out in the other Group E game between Dynamo Kyiv and Benfica.
In Group C, Ajax got off to the perfect start by beating Sporting Lisbon 5-1 as Sebastien Haller netted four goals, which was added to by Steven Berghuis.
Qualification rivals Borussia Dortmund also started well. They beat Besiktas 2-1 thanks to goals from young sensations Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland.
A late winner sealed all three points for Real Madrid against Inter Milan. Rodrygo scored in the 89th minute for the 13 time champions.
That wasn’t enough to put them top of Group D as Champions League newcomers Sheriff Tiraspol beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0.
Finally, Group G is evenly balanced with all four sides on one point each following two draws on Tuesday night.
RB Salzburg and Sevilla drew 1-1 with Luka Sucic and Ivan Rakitic both scoring from the penalty spot. Salzburg also missing two other spot kicks during the game.
French club Lille and German side Wolfsberg featured in the other Group G fixture, drawing 0-0.
