UEFA Europa League final 2021: Villarreal upset Manchester United by winning 11-10 in a dramatic penalty shootout after 1-1 draw

Villarreal won their first-ever major trophy in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night, beating Manchester United on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

Gerard Moreno put the Spaniards ahead midway through the first half, with Edinson Cavani equalising after half-time.

The scrappy affair went all the way to penalties, with Unai Emery’s side winning 11-10 to claim victory.

Penalty heartache for Manchester United

A poor performance on the night saw the match go all the way to penalties, in what turned out to be one of the best shootouts in recent memory.

Every single player on the pitch scored, apart from the unfortunate David de Gea who saw his spot-kick saved by Geronimo Rulli.

Just a few seconds earlier the Argentine fired in his own penalty, making the final score 11-10.

It is Emery’s fourth Europa League trophy, adding to the three he already had from his time at Sevilla.

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United, it was another missed opportunity where they again have nothing to show for all their hard work.

The Yellow Submarine isn’t sinking

What followed after Rulli’s save were wild celebrations as Villarreal won their first-ever major trophy.

The win brings another superb Europa League campaign to a close, with Villarreal’s Moreno finishing as the competition’s top scorer on seven goals.

The Yellow Submarine finished the tournament having not lost a single game, while United fell at the final hurdle.

Victory also means that Villarreal will be playing Champions League football despite only finishing seventh in LaLiga.
