Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the league while the relegation battle intensified at the bottom of the table after the latest set of Premier League fixtures.

Manchester City controversially beat Everton

City required a late winner from Phil Foden as well as a controversial refereeing decision to overcome Everton, winning 1-0 at Goodison Park.

Rodri appeared to handle the ball late in the game in his own penalty area, but the referee decided not to award a penalty as City moved six points clear at the top of the league.

Second-placed Liverpool and third-placed Chelsea were out of league action this weekend, with the Reds beating the Blues in the Carabao Cup final.

Manchester United drop points in top-four race

The remaining top-four side, Manchester United, failed to score again in their 0-0 draw with 19th-placed Watford.

Ralf Rangnick’s side couldn’t convert any of the chances they created as United failed to perform once again.

West Ham’s 1-0 win against Wolves saw them move closer to the Champions League spots, moving just two points away from the Red Devils.

Tomas Soucek netted the only goal of the game as the Hammers battled past their fellow European challengers.

Tottenham also kept chase in the fight for a place in the top four, beating Leeds United 4-0 following a disappointing midweek loss to Burnley.

Goals from Matt Doherty, Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min helped Spurs to victory, a result which saw Marcelo Bielsa sacked by Leeds.

Down at the bottom

Elsewhere, Newcastle picked up another win as their superb run of form under Eddie Howe continued, with the Magpies moving up to 14th in the league.

They comfortably beat 10-man Brentford 2-0 after goals from Joelinton and Joe Willock, with Josh Dasilva being sent off for the Bees.

Norwich still sit bottom of the table and five points away from safety after losing 2-0 to Southampton.

Che Adams and Oriol Romeu were on hand to score for the Saints, who returned to the top half of the division after an impressive showing.

Burnley also remain in the relegation zone after their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

Jeffrey Schlupp gave Palace the lead but an own goal from Luka Milivojevic saw the points shared in London.

Finally, Aston Villa returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Brighton.

Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins scored for Villa, as they condemned the Seagulls to their third straight defeat.

Arsenal and Leicester weren’t in action due to the Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea.
