The latest round of midweek fixtures has now finished, with Manchester City winning again and Burnley pulling off an impressive upset against Manchester United. TIBS News reviews it all.

Manchester City and Liverpool both win

City comfortably beat Brentford 2-0 at the Etihad through strikes from Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne, maintaining their nine-point lead at the top of the table.

Second-placed Liverpool also won, beating Leicester City 2-0 through a Diogo Jota brace and handing former manager Brendan Rodgers another loss.

The Foxes now sit 12th and 14 points away from the top-four position that they were so close to last season.

Manchester United drop points at Burnley

Manchester United failed to beat bottom-placed Burnley, only managing a 1-1 draw when they visited Turf Moor.

A goal each from Paul Pogba and Jay Rodriguez saw the points shared in Lancashire, as United dropped down to sixth.

Despite having Gabriel Martinelli sent off, Arsenal were victorious against Wolves, winning 1-0 against their fellow top-four challengers.

Defender Gabriel gave the Gunners the lead midway through the first half as they moved back into the Champions League places.

Seventh-placed Tottenham Hotspur also dropped points, losing 3-2 against Southampton despite leading the game with just 10 minutes remaining.

A Jan Bednarek own goal was added to by Son Heung-min, but strikes from Armando Broja, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams saw the Saints claim another big result against one of the big six.

Aston Villa and Leeds play out entertaining draw

Elsewhere, there was a six-goal thriller between Aston Villa and Leeds United, with the later coming from behind to earn a 3-3 draw.

Phillippe Coutinho continued his fine form with two assists for youngster Jacob Ramsey and a goal of his own, but a Dan James brace followed by Diego Llorente’s close range finish saw the points shared.

Meanwhile, down at the bottom…

In the relegation battle, Newcastle picked up a huge win against fellow candidates for the bottom three, Everton.

The Magpies quickly responded to a Jamal Lascelles own goal by forcing Mason Holgate to turn into his own net, which was then added to by Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier as they won their second game on the bounce.

Norwich only managed to get a draw against Crystal Palace, although were lucky not to lose after Wilfred Zaha’s shocking penalty miss.

Zaha did manage to net in the second half to cancel out Teemu Pukki’s opener, but the game ended in a draw.

Finally, Watford fell to a 1-0 defeat to West Ham after Jarrod Bowen netted for the home side, handing Roy Hodgson a defeat in his first match in charge of the Hornets.

Chelsea and Brighton didn’t feature during the week.
