A pivotal weekend in the Premier League saw Manchester City gain points on both of their title rivals, while Leeds United moved further clear of the relegation zone. TIBS News reviews the action.

Manchester City leave it late to beat 10-man Arsenal

City came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates, extending their Premier League winning run to 11 games.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring, but Riyad Mahrez equalised from the penalty spot, which was swiftly followed by Gabriel getting sent off before Rodri netted the winner in the dying stages of the match.

The win became even more important for Pep Guardiola’s side after second placed Chelsea drew 2-2 with third-placed Liverpool.

Liverpool blow two-goal lead to draw at Chelsea

The Reds went into an early two-goal lead after strikes from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, but a goal of the season contender from Mateo Kovacic was followed by a fine finish from Christian Pulisic as the points were shared in London.

A draw left both sides far adrift from City, with the champions now 10 points clear of Chelsea and 11 ahead of Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Leeds ease relegation worries against Burnley

At the other end of the table, Leeds moved seven points clear of the relegation zone after a 3-1 win over Burnley.

Goals from Jack Harrison, Stuart Dallas and Dan James were enough for Leeds, who weren’t phased by Maxwel Cornet’s initial equaliser.

Elsewhere, a 96th-minute winner from Davinson Sanchez saw Spurs continue their superb run under Antonio Conte.

The north London side beat Watford 1-0, handing the Hornets their sixth defeat in a row and leaving them just two points above the relegation zone.

Wolves too cunning for Manchester United

Bruno Lage also masterminded Wolves’ first win at Old Trafford since 1980, guiding his side to a 1-0 win over Manchester United.

The Portuguese player stealing the headlines this time was Joao Moutinho, who netted the only goal of the game to hand Ralf Rangnick his first defeat as United manager.

Both West Ham United and Brighton won their respective matches 3-2, beating Crystal Palace and Everton away from home.

The Hammers went into a 3-0 lead before half time thanks to a goal from Michail Antonio and a brace from Manuel Lanzini, before they were given a late scare after strikes from Odsonne Edouard and Michael Olise.

For Brighton, two Alexis Mac Allister goals either side of Dan Burn’s header were enough for them to beat Everton, despite a brace from young scouser Anthony Gordon.

Finally, Brentford came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 and earn their first win since early December.

Villa went ahead through a superb strike by Danny Ings, but were pegged back by Yoane Wissa and Mads Roerslev
