Liverpool lost their second consecutive home game while Southampton shipped nine goals for the second season in a row during one of the most exciting round of fixtures so far this season.

In a record-equalling result, Manchester United beat the Saints 9-0 at Old Trafford to put right their recent poor performances against Sheffield United and Arsenal.

Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off two minutes into his debut after a horrific tackle on Scott McTominay, which was added to when Jan Bednarek was also dismissed towards the end of the game.

The goals came streaming in against the 10-men of Southampton, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, McTominay, two from Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Dan James all scoring on top of a Bednarek own goal.

Elsewhere, Liverpool fell to a shocking 1-0 defeat against Brighton as they lost their second home match in a row. Steven Alzate netted midway through the second half as the Reds fell even further behind United and Manchester City.

City comfortably extended their winning run with a 2-0 win over Burnley.
Strikes from Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling handed Pep Guardiola’s side all three points as they held on to top spot.

Following a 2-0 win over Fulham, Leicester City also overtook Liverpool and moved into third place. Kelechi Iheanacho and James Justin both found the net, but it was James Maddison with two assists who shined again for the Foxes.

History was also made on Thursday night, as Jose Mourinho lost back to back home games for the first time ever as Tottenham were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea. Jorginho scored the only goal of the game, calmly slotting away his first-half penalty.

Arsenal were the victim of VAR again when they lost 2-1 to Wolves, with David Luiz being questionably dismissed for a challenge on Willian Jose before Bernd Leno was rightfully sent off for handling the ball outside his area.

Nicolas Pepe had put the Gunners ahead, but Wolves equalised from the penalty spot through Ruben Neves before an early second half goal by Joao Moutinho handed them all three points.

Jesse Lingard reminded everyone what he is capable of when he netted a brace on his West Ham debut as they defeated Aston Villa 3-1. His goals on top of another strike from Tomas Soucek were too much for Villa, despite a late consolation by Ollie Watkins, as the Hammers rose to fifth.

They are closely followed in the table by Everton, who won 2-1 away at Leeds. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored either side of Raphinha’s equaliser as the Toffees took sixth spot.

In the relegation battle, Sheffield United came from behind to beat West Brom 2-1 and record their third league win of the season. Matt Phillips put the Baggies ahead, but second half strikes from Jayden Bogle and Billy Sharp sealed all three points for Chris Wilder’s side.

Finally, Newcastle were beaten 2-1 at home by Crystal Palace despite Jonjo Shelvey’s early opener. Goals from Jairo Riedewald and Gary Cahill quickly followed as Palace recorded their eighth win of the season.
