Premier League review: Manchester United beat Burnley to go top ahead of clash at Liverpool, while Arsenal and Spurs drop points

Manchester United went top of the Premier League as half of the division’s clubs competed in midweek fixtures, while Sheffield United picked up their first league win of the season.

In a match full of VAR controversy, United eventually defeated Burnley 1-0.

Harry Maguire had a goal questionably disallowed in the first half, but Paul Pogba’s deflected strike in the second period sealed all three points for United.

Winning their game in-hand means they leapfrog Liverpool, going three points clear at the top of the table.

Local rivals Manchester City also continued their upturn in form, beating Brighton 1-0 thanks to a goal from Phil Foden.

The strike saw him become City’s top scorer in all competitions, taking him to eight goals for the season.

The win means Pep Guardiola’s side move to third in the table, behind Liverpool and United.

Spurs failed to keep up with their title rivals, labouring to a 1-1 draw against Fulham.

Harry Kane initially put Jose Mourinho’s side ahead before they were pegged back by Ivan Cavaleiro as the points were shared in London.

The draw puts Fulham just two points away from safety, with two games in-hand on 17th placed Brighton.

Fellow London clubs Arsenal and Crystal Palace also drew, with their match finishing 0-0 on Thursday night.

Sheffield United gave themselves some hope when they beat Newcastle 1-0.

Billy Sharp’s penalty handed the Blades their first league win of the season, although they still sit nine points away from safety.

There was also a worrying resemblance between their result, a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle, and the only win of the worst side in Premier League history – 07/08 Derby County – which was also a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle!
