Manchester City missed their chance to win another Premier League title, while West Brom and Fulham were relegated to the Championship.
Chelsea spoil Manchester City’s title celebrations
City lost 2-1 to Chelsea at the weekend, despite initially going ahead through Raheem Sterling.
Sergio Aguero produced one of the worst penalties in recent history just minutes later, before the Blues came back through Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso to push City’s celebrations back another week.
Mixed results for clubs battling for a top-four finish
Manchester United kept up their pursuit of City after a 3-1 win away at Aston Villa. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side came from behind, with Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani all scoring following Bertrand Traore’s initial opener.
There was a drop down to fourth for Leicester, who got trashed 4-2 by Newcastle United, which saw Chelsea move into the top three. Callum Wilson netted twice along with Joe Willock and Paul Dummett as Steve Bruce’s team all-but confirmed another season of topflight football.
Both Merseyside clubs also won to aid their pursuit of top six finishes.
A rejuvenated Liverpool side beat Southampton 2-0 thanks to a goal from Sadio Mane and a first Reds goal for Thiago.
Everton picked up three points against fifth placed West Ham, winning 1-0 through a Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal to move within two points of the European places.
Spurs didn’t fare as well, losing 3-1 to Leeds United at Elland Road. Marcelo Bielsa’s side haven’t lost at home to the traditional ‘big six’ this season and got the victory this weekend thanks to strikes from Stuart Dallas, Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo.
End of the road for West Brom and Fulham
At the other end of the table, West Brom’s relegation was finally confirmed after they were beaten 3-1 by Arsenal. Goals for Emile Smith-Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Willian were enough to condemn the Baggies to the second tier, despite a super second half strike from Matheus Pereira.
Fulham’s relegation was also confirmed as they lost 2-0 at home to Burnley. Strikes from Ashley Westwood and Chris Wood sealed the Cottagers fate as they returned to the second tier.
Elsewhere, Crystal Palace confirmed their safety with a comfortable 2-0 triumph against Sheffield United. A dominant performance brought goals from Christian Benteke and Eberechi Eze as the Eagles now look towards their huge summer rebuild.
Finally, Wolves came from behind to beat the ten men of Brighton, winning 2-1 through goals from Adama Traore and Morgan Gibbs-White. Lewis Dunk had opened the scoring for the Seagulls but was sent of in the second half, which was made worse by Neal Maupay being dismissed after the final whistle.
