Premier League review: Liverpool lose ground in title race with defeat as rivals Manchester United, Manchester City and Leicester all win

The Premier League table remains the same after this week’s round of midweek fixtures, with most of the top four picking up wins in their respective games.

Leicester briefly went to the top of the league after their impressive 2-0 win against Chelsea, proving yet again that they should be considered title contenders.

Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison both netted in the first half to help the Foxes overcome Frank Lampard’s side, leaving the Chelsea manager’s future in doubt.

Just a day later, Manchester United and Manchester City both picked up wins against Fulham and Aston Villa to overtake Leicester.

City eventually put two past Villa, with Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan scoring late in the game to overcome Dean Smith’s resilient side.

They went top of the league for a couple of hours until their local rivals came from behind to defeat Fulham 2-1.

Scott Parker’s side initially took the lead through Ademola Lookman, but a poacher’s finish from Edinson Cavani and a sublime long-range effort by Paul Pogba sealed all three points for United who returned to the top of the table.

Liverpool, however, were not as fortunate and they lost at 1-0 at Anfield to Burnley, ending their near four-year unbeaten home league record.

Ashley Barnes scored the only goal of the game as Sean Dyche’s side claimed a historic victory, leaving their opponents six points away from top spot.

Elsewhere, West Ham beat West Brom 2-1 to rise to seventh and just two points away from the top four.

Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio both scored for the Hammers as they swept aside their opponents, despite an initial equaliser from Matheus Pereira.

Teams return to league action in another round of midweek games next week, due to the fourth round of the FA Cup taking place this weekend.
