Premier League review: Chelsea and Liverpool leapfrog Leicester City in top-four race going into the season finale

The penultimate week of Premier League action saw fans finally return as well as a big shift in the European qualification picture.

Chelsea and Leicester City in control of top-four race

Despite their first-ever FA Cup win last weekend, Leicester fell to defeat against Chelsea in the league and dropped into fifth.

Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho both netted before Kelechi Iheanacho’s consolation strike as the Blues won 2-1.

Liverpool’s win against Burnley also saw them move above the Foxes, beating the Lancashire side 3-0. Goals for Roberto Firmino, Nat Phillips and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin saw the Reds go back into the top four.

West Ham look set for Europa League football

West Ham are in the driving seat to finish in sixth place, having come from behind to beat West Brom 3-1.

The Hammers went behind after Matheus Pereira scored directly from a corner but strikes from Tomas Soucek, Angelo Ogbonna and Michail Antonio sealed the win for David Moyes’ side.

Tottenham were outside contenders for the top four, but a disappointing 2-1 loss to Aston Villa means they will have to fight for the final Europa League spot on Sunday.

Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn scored the opener, but a shocking own goal from Sergio Reguilon was followed by a cool Ollie Watkins finish to give Villa all three points.

A 1-0 win for Everton over a poor Wolves team means the Toffees are still in with a shout to qualify for the Europa League. Richarlison scored the only goal of the game to keep their European hopes alive.

Champions Manchester City stunned by Brighton

Elsewhere, a superb comeback by Brighton saw them beat this season’s champions Manchester City 3-2 – who were reduced to 10 men early.

Ilkay Gundogan fired City into a two-minute lead but they were soon down a man when Joao Cancelo was sent off. However, shortly after the restart they doubled their lead when Phil Foden netted. But a trio of quickfire goals from Leandro Trossard, Adam Webster and Dan Burn saw Brighton claim victory to stun Pep Guardiola’s side.

Meanwhile, Manchester United confirmed a second place finish with their 1-1 draw against Fulham.

A superb long-range lob by Edinson Cavani put his side ahead, but Joe Bryan capitalised on poor second-half defending to equalise for the Championship-bound Cottagers.

Roy Hodgson’s Selhurst swansong ends in defeat

Roy Hodgson’s final game at Selhurst Park ended in a late defeat, with Crystal Palace losing 3-1 to Arsenal.

The Gunners went ahead through a Nicolas Pepe penalty before Christian Benteke equalised. But strikes in added time from Gabriel Martinelli and a second for Pepe sealed the win for Mikel Arteta’s team.

Arsenal loanee Joe Willock scored the only goal in Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Sheffield United and will be welcomed back to the Emirates in the summer.

Finally, Leeds United cruised past Southampton, with Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts netting in a comfortable 2-0 triumph.
