Premier League review: Alisson Becker is Liverpool’s unlikely matchwinner, while Everton are upset at home by Sheffield United

The eight games played in the Premier League this weekend saw a staggering 28 goals and some of the most dramatic action of the season so far.

Contrasting fortunes for Merseyside rivals

Liverpool kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive after a 95th-minute winner in their 2-1 win over West Brom.

Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker rose highest late in the game to head home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner and keep his side in the fight for a Champions League spot.

The Baggies had gone ahead through Hal Robson-Kanu before Mohamed Salah equalised with his 22nd league goal of the season.

For their Merseyside rivals Everton, a shock 1-0 loss to bottom of the table Sheffield United put a big dent in their hopes of a top-six finish.

A debut goal for 17-year-old Daniel Jebbison was enough to hand the Blades their sixth win in what has been an otherwise poor campaign.

Tottenham and West Ham battling for the Europa League

Tottenham capitalised on the defeat to cement their place in sixth, beating Wolves 2-0 and overtaking West Ham in the process.

Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg both scored as Ryan Mason earned his third victory as Tottenham boss.

The Hammers couldn’t keep up with their London rivals, only managing to draw 1-1 against Brighton.

Strikes from Danny Welbeck and Said Benrahma meant the sides went away with a point each, as David Moyes’ team dropped to seventh.

Manchester City edge past Newcastle in seven-goal thriller

Elsewhere, Manchester City showed everyone why they are champions again with a 4-3 victory over Newcastle.

Goals from Emil Krafth, Joelinton and Joe Willock gave the Geordies some hope, but a Ferran Torres hat-trick and a deflected strike from Joao Cancelo saw City continue their superb form.

Leeds United also continued their fantastic first campaign back in the Premier League, beating Burnley 4-0 to remain in the top half of the table.

A brace from Rodrigo followed goals by Mateusz Klich and Jack Harrison as the Yorkshire club brushed aside Sean Dyche’s Clarets.

Finally, there were wins for both Southampton and Crystal Palace against Fulham and Aston Villa.

Palace came from behind to beat Villa 3-2, with Roy Hodgson’s side initially going behind to John McGinn and Anwar El Ghazi strikes.

Tyrick Mitchell then scored the first goal of his professional career alongside Christian Benteke and Wilfred Zaha finishes as the Eagles completed a fine comeback in south London.

For Southampton, Che Adams, Nathan Tella and Theo Walcott got on the scoresheet as they comfortably beat Fulham.
