Premier League preview: Joint-leaders Liverpool and Tottenham go head-to-head as Leicester host Everton

Midweek Premier League fixtures return this week, as the top 20 clubs in England face off in the next round of games in the busy festive period.

Tottenham and Liverpool both dropped points at the weekend, drawing 1-1 against Crystal Palace and Fulham.

This time, the two giants face off in one of the biggest games of the domestic season so far with a win for either side moving them three points ahead of the other at the top of the league.

Harry Kane and Heung-min Son will go toe to toe with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in what is set to be one of the highlights of the campaign so far.

A variety of teams will be ready to capitalise on any points dropped, specifically third-placed Leicester City.

They welcome seventh-placed Everton – with both sides on good form after impressive wins over the weekend.

Both clubs also boast two of the competition’s top scorers, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin firing in 11 for the Toffees while Jamie Vardy has scored 10 for the Foxes.

Chelsea visit Wolves, also looking to keep themselves involved at the top end of the table despite losing 1-0 to Everton last weekend.

Their upcoming opponents also lost though and don’t look the same as they have in recent years, particularly with the absence of key man Raul Jimenez.

One team who aren’t faring so well this season is Arsenal, who find themselves just five points above the relegation zone.

In contrast, their opponents on Wednesday are Southampton who have been in fantastic form and sit fourth in the league.

A win could potentially see them go to the top of the table, depending on the Spurs result.

Sheffield United sit bottom of the league without a win or a clean sheet and they welcome Manchester United who are currently eighth.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described their 0-0 draw last time out against Manchester City as the best they have played in a derby, but their attackers must be on far better form on Thursday in order to secure all three points.

City will also need an improvement in their performance when they play West Brom on Tuesday night.

Like their rivals, they will also need to be better despite facing off against one of the out of form teams in the league.

Their opponents have only won once this season – that coming against the bottom side Sheffield United.

West Ham are going somewhat under the radar, currently round off the top six spots.

They face Crystal Palace at the London Stadium, hoping to continue their fine form and keep in touch with the rest of the top six.

Palace meanwhile are nicely poised in midtable and will be full of confidence after their 1-1 draw with league leaders Tottenham.

Burnley, also coming off the back of a good result against a north London club, travel to Aston Villa.

Their opponents are currently 10th but with two games in hand and could rise as high as third if they were to win both of those.

Fulham will look to gain ground at the bottom of the table when they face fellow strugglers Brighton.

Scott Parker’s side have shown a different side to them in recent weeks, picking up a number of good results which they will look to continue against the Seagulls.

A win will see them overtake Brighton and blow the race for Premier League survival wide open.

Finally, Newcastle United travel to Leeds in what is looking like the only clash this week that won’t have any serious ramifications on the league table.
