Reigning champions Manchester City fell to defeat against Nuno Espirito Santo’s Spurs while the rest of last season’s top four all put in dominant showings as the 2021-22 Premier League season got underway at the weekend.
City were the victims of a superb counter-attacking performance from Tottenham, who came out 1-0 winners thanks to a second half effort from Son Heung-min.
Despite the victory, the game was surrounded by questions regarding Harry Kane’s future – with the forward being left out of the Tottenham squad.
Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all start with wins
Manchester United were fantastic against Leeds, winning 5-1 to see themselves end the first week at the top of the table.
A hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes as well as strikes from Mason Greenwood and Fred helped United to victory, but the highlight of the game was Paul Pogba notching up four assists in just 70 minutes.
Chelsea and Liverpool make up the rest of the top three behind United, both winning their respective games 3-0.
The Blues beat Crystal Palace with Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic and Trevoh Chalobah all netting.
For the Reds, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah all scored in a comfortable victory over the newly-promoted Norwich.
West Ham beat Newcastle in a six-goal thriller
West Ham end the week in fourth, coming from behind to beat Newcastle 4-2 on Sunday and continue from where they left off last season.
Both Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy scored for the Magpies but strikes from Aaron Creswell, Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio ended the Hammers a well-deserved win.
Elsewhere, Leicester got off to a great start by beating Wolves 1-0.
Jamie Vardy again scored on the opening day of a Premier League season, as the Foxes came out on top against Bruno Lage and his players.
Brentford stun Arsenal in curtain-raiser
Arsenal struggled, falling to a disappointing 2-0 loss at the hands of the newly promoted Brentford.
Goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard handed the Bees their best possible start to their first season in the top-flight since 1947.
The final new addition to the Premier League, Watford, also kicked off their campaign with a win against Aston Villa.
They raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to strikes from Emmanuel Dennis, Ismaila Sarr and Cucho Hernandez, but were given a late scare when John McGinn and Danny Ings netted for Villa as the match ended 3-2.
Everton also netted three, coming from behind to beat a struggling Southampton side 3-1.
New signing Adam Armstrong scored for the Saints, but Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all scored to hand Rafael Benitez his first win as Toffees manager.
Finally, Brighton defeated Burnley 2-1 thanks to strikes from Neal Maupay and Alexis MacAllister after they initially went behind to a James Tarkowski header.
