Donny van de Beek’s nightmare spell at Manchester United has come to a temporary end after joining Eintracht Frankfurt on loan until the end of the season.
The German side are paying a loan fee for the Dutchman and the deal includes an option to make the move permanent in the summer for an initial £9.5million with a further £2.6m in add-ons.
It is also understood that Eintracht are covering the majority of the 26-year-old midfielder’s wages.
Van de Beek, who will wear the No 25 shirt at his new club, has made just six Premier League starts since joining United from Ajax for £40m in September 2020 – with his contract due to expire in 18 months’ time.
And this season he has only played 21 minutes for the Red Devils across two substitute appearances against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Carabao Cup.
Manchester United’s statement
In a statement released on Monday morning, Manchester United wished Van de Beek all the best.
‘Everyone at Manchester United wishes Donny all the best in Frankfurt for the rest of the season!’ they wrote.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s statement
Eintracht sports director Markus Krosche said of the move: ‘Donny van de Beek fits our game idea perfectly and is an important piece of the puzzle for our team.
‘He brings a wealth of international experience that our young players will benefit from.
‘Donny exudes a goal-scoring threat and, above all, should put our attackers in promising positions.’
In total, Van de Beek made 62 appearances for United across all competitions, scoring twice.
He had a loan spell at Everton in 2022 before returning to United, and missed the second half of last season with a serious knee injury.
Eintracht are currently sixth in the German Bundesliga table, nine points off the top four, and are in the Europa Conference League play-offs.
The Bundesliga is currently on its winter break and Eintracht’s next match is away at RB Leipzig on 13 January.
