Manchester United played out a 1-1 score draw against Chelsea in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first Premier League game in charge as interim manager ahead of Ruben Amorim’s arrival.
After a dull first-half and with little between the sides, apart from a Noni Madueke’s header for the visitors thumping the post and Marcus Rashford doing equally as well at the other end with a thunderous volley, the game burst into life.
Chelsea wanted a penalty in the opening 45 minutes after the ball bounced to Levi Colwill, from Madueke’s header, who had a rocketed effort goal bound.
The Chelsea defender’s foot collided with his counterpart, Manchester United’s Lisandro Martínez, but nothing was given.
Little happened in large patches of this match as the two powerhouses of the Premier League offered little entertainment inside of Old Trafford.
Two goals in a few minutes spark the game into life
However, just after the 70th minute, Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana mistimed his jump which allowed Rasmus Hojlund to go through on goal before Blue’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez hacked the striker down for a penalty.
Bruno Fernandes cooly slotted the penalty home as the Chelsea shot stopper dived the wrong way, the Portuguese international was bombarded by team-mates as Van Nistelrooy couldn’t hide his ecstatic emotion.
Minutes later, British footballs most expensive player, Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, uncorked a cracker after Casemiro’s header fell kindly to the midfielder at the edge of the box who rifled home a brilliant volley.
In the dying seconds of the game, where the London side were dominating territory and possession, Martinez thumped into England international Cole Palmer, clawing his studs into the creative midfielder’s knee.
A yellow card was shown, and VAR agreed with referee as the game fizzled out with both teams hoping for better performances soon.
