Premier League preview: Manchester City host Leeds United while Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham take on Manchester United

The Premier League run-in continues this weekend with the 31st round of fixtures, as Manchester City continue to get away at the top of the table and the battle for Europe goes on below them.

League leaders City welcome Leeds United in what is shaping up to be an exciting game, with tactical masterminds Pep Guardiola and Marcelo Bielsa going head-to-head.

A win for Guardiola’s side would see them move 17 points clear of their rivals Manchester United in second place and one step closer to a seventh top flight title.

Must-win game for United

To keep the pressure on, United must win against Tottenham the following day.

The match sees Jose Mourinho come up against his former club, hoping to replicate the 6-1 victory from earlier in the campaign.

Spurs are just three points away from the top four and will be looking to push into the Champions League spots as the season draws to a close.

Fellow European challengers, Leicester and West Ham, face off against each other in a huge match at the top end of the league.

As it stands, qualification for the Champions League is in both clubs’ hands but with Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Everton lurking behind they will need to keep up the form they have shown in recent weeks.

Despite a disappointing 5-2 loss to West Brom last weekend, Chelsea got back to winning ways against Porto on Wednesday.

They will need to do the same again this weekend when they play Crystal Palace with the aim of pushing back into the top four.

Liverpool need to bounce back after Real defeat

Liverpool weren’t as fortunate, being outclassed by Real Madrid in a 3-1 defeat.

The Reds have the chance to put themselves back on the right track when they face Aston Villa, hoping to avoid anything like the 7-2 thrashing suffered earlier in the season.

Merseyside rivals Everton are just about keeping in touching distance of those above them and need to beat Brighton on Monday night if they want to break into the European places.

The Seagulls have their own aims of avoiding relegation to the Championship, with the opportunity to go nine points clear of the bottom three if they can beat the Toffees.

Elsewhere, Arsenal could move within four points of the top six with a win against bottom club Sheffield United.

Currently on 42 points, the Gunners need to win to have a clear chance of qualifying for European competition.

Down at the bottom

Regardless of their thrilling victory against Chelsea last weekend, West Brom remain eight points adrift from safety.

They could close the gap to five with a win against Southampton on Monday, but like the Blades below them they seem to have left it too late to mount a push for survival.

Those above them, Newcastle and Fulham, are going head to head to avoid the final relegation spot with just three points separating the sides in 17th and 18th position.

Scott Parker’s Fulham welcome Wolves on Friday night, while Steve Bruce’s Newcastle travel to Burnley on Sunday afternoon.
