West Brom, in Sam Allardyce’s second match as manager, struck in the final minutes of the match to stun Premier League champions Liverpool by earning an unlikely 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Semi Ajayi was the relegation-strugglers Baggies’ hero with an 82nd-minute header to see them leave Merseyside with a share of the spoils.
The defender’s effort cancelled out Sadio Mane’s first-half strike and prevented the Reds from going five points clear at the top of the table.
The game began as most do for Liverpool – as they dominated possession. This was even more evident on Sunday as they enjoyed 84 per cent of the ball in the first half, which resembled more of a training session.
But despite their clear dominance, it became clear that the Reds would not enjoy the game to the same manner as they did in their 7-0 rout of Crystal Palace a week earlier. At half-time, just one goal separated the sides thanks to Joel Matip picking out Mane in the box for the opening score.
The second 45 told a different story, however. The same high line which had created the only Liverpool goal was beaten numerous times, and saved only by the hands of Alisson Becker – as well as the occasional flag of the linesmen.
As for the front three, numerous chances were presented, but too many times the ball strayed untouched through West Brom’s box. The Reds would finish the game with just two of their 17 shot attempts on target.
Frustration began to set in for Liverpool, as Matip exited the game due to an unknown injury, and some generous officiating from referee Kevin Friend caused an outburst from manager Jurgen Klopp – one which warranted a yellow card.
But that frustration would only turn into disappointment soon after when a corner taken short by the visitors saw Ajayi head home, ricocheting off the post and earning the Baggies a point.
For Liverpool, this result may not have been so unexpected as they have struggled against lesser opposition this season – having recorded two draws a win against the three teams currently in the relegation zone: West Brom (1-1), Fulham (1-1) and Sheffield United (2-1).
As for West Brom, the point earned may not see them move any further up the table just yet but it is a promising sign for Allardyce as they battle to avoid the drop.
