European Review: Inter beat AC Milan to extend their lead at the top of Serie A while Dortmund hammed rivals Schalke 04

An interesting weekend in Europe saw Inter Milan move four points clear at the top after derby win, Erling Braut Haaland net two as Borussia Dortmund sink Schalke 04. The Ligue 1 title race has taken another turn as Monaco beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 and Levante shocked Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Sunday’s Milan derby saw Inter Milan’s search for their first Scudetto since 2010 boosted after a 3-0 victory over AC Milan.

Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku led Inter to their third straight league win as they moved four points clear of AC Milan.

Milan have now suffered back-to-back defeats in the league for the first time this season after their impressive start.

Stefano Pioli’s side face Roma next week which could make or break their hopes of securing the title, while Inter play mid-table Genoa.

Borussia Dortmund got back to winning ways after a 4-0 demolition of Schalke in the Revierderby.

After his brace in the Champions League earlier this week Haaland bagged another two on Saturday including a stunning volley in the first-half.

Dortmund remain six points off the Champions League spots, however they still have to play every team in the top four so qualification for the Champions League is all to play for.

Defeat leaves Schalke on just nine points and eight points off safety as relegation looks likely for the first time since 1988.

The Ligue 1 title race has taken another twist as Monaco beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 at the Parc Des Princes.

Goals from Sofiane Diop and Guillermo Maripan saw Les Monégasques complete the double over PSG this season.

Niko Kovac’s side are unbeaten since December and this run has seen them climb within six points of league leaders Lille.

PSG finished the game with 75% possession but could not make all that time on the ball count.

Mauricio Pochettino side remain third and four points off the top before a trip to strugglers Dijon next Saturday as they look to get back to winning ways.

One of the shocks of the weekend saw Levante beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

A Mario Hermoso own goal and a late counterattack where Jorge de Frutos rolled the ball in the empty net was enough to move Levante up to eight

Atletico dominated the game and generated 28 shots but could not break Levante’s resilient defence.

Diego Simeone’s side remain three points clear at the top of La Liga, but now their attention is turned to the Champions League where they host Chelsea.
