The return of the Europa League saw plenty of dramatic fixtures with goals flying in across Thursday evening and the British clubs involved seeing varying success.

West Ham got off to the perfect start on their return to the competition, beating Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in Group H.

A goal for Michail Antonio and a fine solo effort from Declan Rice secured victory for the Hammers.

The other group fixture saw KRC Genk defeat Rapid Vienna 1-0, with Paul Onuachu scoring the goal.

Leicester failed to hold their lead

Leicester City were on course for a 2-0 victory, but a comeback by Italian opponents Napoli saw the match end 2-2.

Ayoze Perez and Harvey Barnes netted for the Foxes, but a brace from Nigerian international Victor Osimhen saw the points shared in Group C.

As a result, Leicester went to joint second after Legia Warsaw beat Spartak Moscow 1-0.

Awful night for Scottish clubs

Both Scottish clubs, Rangers and Celtic, lost their respective games.

In Group A, Steven Gerrard’s side fell to a 2-0 defeat against Lyon with James Tavernier scoring an own goal following Karl Toko Ekambi’s first half finish.

Sparta Prague and Brondby IF drew 0-0 in the other group fixture.

Celtic only just lost their match, ultimately falling short in a thrilling 4-3 encounter with Real Betis.

After going ahead through Albian Ajeti and Josip Juranovic, Ante Postecoglou’s team fell apart and conceded twice to Juanmi, as well as to Juan Miranda and Borja Iglesias.

Anthony Ralston did score on his return to make it 4-3, but it wasn’t enough as the Scottish club were defeated again in Europe.

Bayer Leverkusen were victorious in the other encounter in Group G, beating Hungarian side Ferencvarosi 2-1.

A bizarre own goal saw Thomas Strakosha drop the ball into his own net as Maurizio Sarri’s side were defeated by the Turkish club.

Two former Premier League players were on target in the other fixture, with former Leicester winger Cengiz Under scoring for Marseille while Chelsea-loanee Faustino Anjorin netted for Lokomotiv.
