Europa League last-16 second leg preview: Manchester United have to score at AC Milan, while Tottenham and Arsenal enjoy leads

The second legs of Europa League last-16 fixtures will be played on Thursday, with all four British sides still in with a chance of making the next round.

Man United have the toughest task of the British sides

Competition favourites Manchester United fell to a late equaliser against AC Milan last time out, drawing 1-1 with the Italian side at Old Trafford.

Conceding the away goal means United have to score at the San Siro stadium, and have to keep out the returning Zlatan Ibrahimovic, if they want to make it to the quarter finals.

North London duo Tottenham and Arsenal have the slightly simpler task of holding on to the well-deserved leads they established in their first-leg ties.

Jose Mourinho’s team have a 2-0 lead over Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb thanks to a brace from Harry Kane. They will be looking to move on from their disappointing defeat in the derby last weekend by making it to their first Europa League quarter-final since 2013.

Arsenal also hold a comfortable advantage over their opponents Olympiacos, having beaten the Greek champions 3-1 in the first leg.

Three away goals for Mikel Arteta’s side makes it even harder for their challengers, but the Gunners can’t afford to get complacent.

Scottish Premiership winners Rangers also take an away goal into their second leg against Czech club Slavia Prague.

The pair drew 1-1 last week, but Steven Gerrard’s side have the home advantage and the chance to make it to the quarter finals for the first time in 13 years.

Outside of British interest in the Europa League

Elsewhere, Ajax hold a 3-0 lead over Young Boys, who look set to crash out of the competition. The Swiss club did pull off an upset in the previous round against Bayer Leverkusen, but it looks unlikely that they will do the same this time.

It’s a similar situation for Shakhtar Donetsk, who are 3-0 down to Roma following a disappointing first leg. Despite showing so much promise against the likes of Real Madrid and Inter Milan in the Champions League, the Ukrainian side have been very poor since joining this tournament.

Finally, two Spanish teams look set to make it into the quarter-finals as both take a two-goal lead in their respective games.

Villarreal comfortably beat Dynamo Kiev away from home in the first leg, with defensive duo Pau Torres and Raul Albiol both scoring.

Likewise, Granada won 2-0 against Molde and are just 90 minutes away from the next round, having lost just twice in Europe all season.
