The Champions League returned this week in typically exciting fashion as the first set of knockout games got underway with Europe’s elite battling it out for a spot in the quarter finals of the tournament.

Kylian Mbappe showed everyone that he was up there with the world’s best, netting a brilliant hat-trick as PSG defeated Barcelona 4-1 at the Nou Camp.

Three goals for the French wonderkid were added to by forgotten Everton striker Moise Kean, who is on loan at the Parisians, as the Ligue 1 champions came from behind to win.

Lionel Messi had put Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot, but he was quickly out-shone by Mbappe in what felt like a career-changing match for both players.

Liverpool also took the advantage in the first leg of their tie against German club RB Leipzig, winning 2-0 thanks to a strong second half showing.

There were goals for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, but new defensive signing Ozan Kabak stole the show with a man of the match performance on his Champions League debut for the Reds.

Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo and his Juventus teammates struggled to overcome a resilient Porto side, losing 2-1 to the Portuguese champions.

Early goals in each half from Mehdi Taremi and Moussa Marega put the home side comfortably ahead before a crucial late away goal from Federico Chiesa gave the Italian giants some hope going into the second leg.

Finally, Erling Haaland netted twice to become the competition’s top goal scorer with his seventh and eighth of the season, as Borussia Dortmund edged a 3-2 win over Sevilla.

Former Liverpool winger Suso scored the opener for the Spaniards before they were pegged back by Mahmoud Dahoud and the Haaland brace.

Ex-Newcastle striker Luuk De Jong got one back for Sevilla, but the match ended 3-2 in Dortmund’s favour.
