This week’s Champions League review of week two saw one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history, as well as some important results for the English sides.
Manchester City lose in Paris
Manchester City failed to repeat their heroics from last season’s semi-finals, losing 2-0 to PSG on Tuesday night.
A goal from Idrissa Gueye followed by Lionel Messi’s first strike for the club ensured the Parisians were victorious over Pep Guardiola and his players.
In the other Group A match, Club Brugge came from behind to shock RB Leipzig and win 2-1 thanks to strikes from Hans Vanaken and Mats Rits despite.
French midfielder Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring for Leipzig, netting his fourth in the competition.
Champions Chelsea are defeated in Turin
Like City, Chelsea suffered defeat by one of the biggest clubs in Europe as they were beaten 1-0 by Juventus.
Italian winger Federico Chiesa scored the only goal of the Group H match, just 11 seconds into the second half.
There was a comfortable win in the other group game, as Zenit St. Petersburg thrashed Malmo 4-0.
Five-star showing from Liverpool in Porto
Liverpool fared much better in their game against Porto in Group B, beating them 5-1 away from home.
Braces from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were added to by Sadio Mane as the Reds made it two wins out of two in Europe.
Two late goals for Atletico Madrid – including a 97th-minute Luis Suarez penalty – ensured they came away with all three points against AC Milan.
Rafael Leao opened the scoring for Milan, but Antoinne Griezmann netting followed by Suarez completed a fine comeback.
Manchester United leave it late against Villarreal
Manchester United came from behind in dramatic fashion to beat Villarreal 2-1 and avenge their loss to the Spanish side in last season’s Europa League final.
Unai Emery’s team went ahead through Paco Alcacer, but a fantastic equaliser from Alex Telles was followed by a 95th-minute winner from none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.
The win wasn’t enough for United to go top of Group F, after Atalanta beat Young Boys 1-0 thanks to a Matteo Pessina goal.
Real Madrid stunned by Moldovan minnows Sheriff
Elsewhere, one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history played out at the Bernabeu as Moldovan National Division side Sheriff Tiraspol beat 13-time champions Real Madrid 2-1.
Jasurbek Yakhshiboev opened the scoring with a great header before Karim Benzema equalised from the penalty spot, only for Sebastien Thill to score a superb late winner and send his team top of Group D.
They are now very close to qualifying for the knockout stages, after Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk could only manage a 0-0 draw.
Barcelona’s miserable European season continues
Barcelona have officially made their worst ever start to a Champions League campaign, sitting bottom of Group E after losing 3-0 to Benfica.
Darwin Nunez scored either side of Rafa Silva’s strike as the Portuguese club brushed aside Ronald Koeman’s players.
Fellow European giants Bayern Munich thrashed Dinamo Kyiv 5-0, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice followed by goals from Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
In Group C, Donyell Malen scored the only goal of the game as Borussia Dortmund came out 1-0 winners over Sporting Lisbon.
Ajax defeated Besiktas 2-0 in the other match in the group, with Steven Berghuis and Sebastian Haller scoring again for the Eredivisie champions.
Finally, two Karim Adeyemi penalties sealed victory for RB Salzburg over Lille, with the Austrian champions winning 2-1 in Group G.
The other fixture saw Sevilla and Wolfsberg draw 1-1 with goals from Ivan Rakitic and Renato Steffen.
