Champions League last-16 second leg preview: Chelsea look to defend 1-0 lead against Atletico Madrid

The remaining English clubs – Manchester City and Chelsea – as well as the current holders Bayern Munich and 13-time winners Real Madrid are all in action in the final set of last 16 Champions League fixtures.

City hold a comfortable 2-0 lead over Borussia Monchengladbach following their first leg win and are expected to advance to the quarter finals this week.

Pep Guardiola’s side are clear at the top of the Premier League, in an FA Cup quarter-final and the Carabao Cup final and will be hoping to continue their stellar season with a run at the Champions League.

Chelsea entertain the LaLiga leaders

Fellow English club Chelsea also have the advantage going into their second leg against Atletico Madrid, with a one-goal lead over the Spaniards.

Olivier Giroud scored the decisive goal last time out and will need to continue his superb European form to keep out the current La Liga leaders. Diego Simeone’s team are six points clear, having lost just twice in the league all season.

Elsewhere, the current champions Bayern are in a good position to make the quarter-finals following their 4-1 aggregate lead over Lazio.

The Germans haven’t lost in the competition in over two years now, and even with an unlikely defeat on the night, their opponents would need three goals in order to advance to the next round.

Real Madrid host Atalanta

Finally, Real Madrid welcome Atalanta to the Santiago Bernabeu, looking to capitalise on their 1-0 win away from home in the first leg.

Despite holding a slender lead, Madrid only just won the first game thanks to an 86th minute winner from left back Ferland Mendy.

Zinedine Zidane’s side will need to be careful against the attacking Italian team and can’t get complacent heading into the second leg.
