148 arrested in Paris after PSG’s Champions League defeat

Police in Paris were busy last night where they arrested 148 Paris-Saint-Germain fans after cars were set on fire following the 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich.

Fire fighters were called to near the Champs Elysées to extinguish burning cars.

Fans clashed with police smashed shop windows in the French capital following the disappointment after the Champions League final defeat.

The two main areas where violence occurred was around the Parc des Princes stadium and on the Champs-Elysées avenue both during and after the game on Sunday night.

Thousands of supporters were out on the streets to watch the game on a big screen but what started with lighting flares and chanting led to groups of fans throwing bottles and fireworks at the police. In response they fired tear gas and rubber bullets.

The Champs-Elysees, was badly hit with vehicles set on fire, and shop windows smashed and shops vandalised.

The Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed that ’16 police were injured, 12 shops attacked and about 15 vehicles damaged overnight’.

He took to twitter to condemned the ‘unacceptable’ violence before thanking the police who arrested “small violent groups, troublemakers.”

Social distancing regulations were largely ignored inside and outside the Parc des Princes among fans. Police confirmed that 404 people in total were stopped for not wearing face masks.
