Premier League review week 18: Liverpool and Chelsea drop points as table-toppers Manchester City thump Newcastle

Twitter/@OfficialFPL

Just four Premier League games took place over the weekend in our review as Covid-19 continues to put a halt to the busy Christmas period.

Tottenham and Liverpool play out entertaining draw

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur played out one of the games of the season so far, drawing 2-2 in north London.

Harry Kane netted his first home league goal of the campaign, before Diogo Jota and Andy Robertson scored for the Reds to put them into the lead.

Spurs winger Son Heung-min then bagged the equaliser, which was quickly followed by a red card for Robertson – with the Scotland captain wiping out Emerson Royal.

Dropping points saw the gap between Liverpool in second and Manchester City in first get bigger, especially after City’s win over Newcastle.

Manchester City cruise to victory at Newcastle

A comfortable afternoon for Pep Guardiola’s team saw them beat the Magpies 4-0 at St. James’ Park.

Goals from Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling were enough for City, who went three points clear at the top of the league while their opponents fell to their tenth loss of the season.

Covid-hit Chelsea held at Wolves

Chelsea still sit third in the league but fell further away from the top two after only managing a 0-0 draw against Wolves.

A Covid-19 outbreak at the club left the Blues with just four outfield players on their bench, but their performance on the pitch was still poor.

Daniel Podence had a goal disallowed for the home side, but the Blues were again lacklustre and failed to convert any of their chances.

Arsenal move up to fourth with rout at Leeds

Finally, Arsenal’s 4-1 victory against Leeds was enough to see them into the top four, with the Gunners comfortably overcoming Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Gabriel Martinelli scored twice and netted the 7,000th Premier League goal for the north London club, alongside strikes from fellow young talents Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.

A late consolation from the penalty spot by Raphinha wasn’t enough for Leeds, who are just five points above the relegation zone.

More last-minute postponements due to Covid

Everton vs Leicester and Aston Villa vs Burnley were postponed last minute due to Covid-19 issues.
