There were major changes in our Premier League review this weekend, with Chelsea falling away from top spot and Newcastle finally moving off of the foot of the table.
Chelsea beaten in London derby to slip from first
Chelsea suffered their second league defeat of the season, losing 3-2 to London rivals West Ham United and dropping to third in the process.
Goals from Thiago Silva and Mason Mount weren’t enough for the Blues, who let in strikes from Manuel Lanzini, Jarrod Bowen and Arthur Masuaku.
Manchester City cruise past Watford to go top
Manchester City would capitalise on the Blues defeat, comfortably beating Watford 3-1 to go top of the league.
Raheem Sterling’s opener was added to twice by Bernardo Silva, with City dominant against the Hornets yet again.
There was also a late win for Liverpool who left it until the 94th minute to beat Wolves 1-0.
The only goal of the game came from Divock Origi, who scored late on to ensure the Reds went into second place.
Manchester United’s Ralf Rangnick reign begins with a win
Manchester United got off to a winning start under new manager Ralf Rangnick, beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at Old Trafford.
A superb curling effort from Fred was enough for United, who moved back into the top six.
The Red Devils overtook Arsenal, who slumped to a 2-1 defeat away at Everton.
The Gunners went ahead through Martin Odegaard but late goals from Richarlison and then Demari Gray saw the Toffees finally win.
The other north London side, Tottenham, easily beat Norwich 3-0 and take the final European place as a result.
A goal of the season contender from Lucas Moura was followed up with strikes from Davinson Sanchez and Son Heung-min as Antonio Conte’s side won again.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa continued their fine form under new manager Steven Gerrard, coming from behind to beat Leicester City 2-1.
The Foxes initially went ahead through Harvey Barnes, but a brace from defender Ezri Konsa saw Villa take all three points.
Newcastle record their first Premier League win of the season
At the bottom of the table, Newcastle picked up their first win of the season after beating Burnley 1-0.
Callum Wilson’s first half strike was enough to secure the win for Eddie Howe’s side, with the Magpies moving into 19th in the process.
Brighton left it until the 98th minute to equalise against Southampton, with Neal Maupay again scoring late on to rescue some points for the Seagulls.
The Saints went ahead through Chelsea loanee Armando Broja but didn’t have enough in them to hold out even against the ten men of Brighton, after Leandro Trossard went off late with a serious injury.
Finally, Leeds and Brentford played out an entertaining 2-2 draw, with the hosts needing a 95th-minute penalty from Patrick Bamford to ensure the points were shared.
Tyler Roberts had put Leeds ahead, but goals from Shandon Baptiste and Sergi Canos meant that Marcelo Bielsa’s side needed the late equaliser.
