Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael, has won the Formula Two World Championship despite finishing 18th in the Sprint Race at Bahrain.

Mick pipped fellow Ferrari Academy driver Callum Ilott to the crown in a dramatic final race of the season.

The two contenders lined up next to each other, in third and fourth, on the grid with Schumacher only needing to finish eighth to claim the title. However, Schumacher’s race and title ambitions nearly came crashing down after a lock up that created a huge flat spot on his tyre, forcing the German to pit, dropping him to 20th.

Ilott, who was third at the time, could see the championship ahead of him as he needed to win the race to win the title. But it all began to unravel with ten laps to go as his tyres started to fall away. This allowed five different drivers to pass him, as well as his championship.

Schumacher finished the season with 215 points, 14 ahead of Ilott on 201. Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda finished third with 200 points.

Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala was the winner of the chaotic race that saw action from beginning to end. After a 32-lap battle, the Indian driver managed to overtake British driver Dan Ticktum and calmly bought it home, with a three and a half second advantage on the 34th and final lap.

Yuki Tsunoda overtook Dan Ticktum on the final corner to finish in second. Guanyu Zhou finished fourth, with Robert Shwartzman in fifth. Giuliano Alesi finished with his best result this season in sixth, with Luca Ghiotto and Felipe Drugovich rounding out the points paying positions.

Schumacher has already been confirmed to be a F1 driver next year for Haas, and on the title win, the German said: ‘To be honest. I’m a bit overwhelmed, I don’t yet feel like a champion. It will take a few days I think.

‘The guys who I have been driving against this year are absolutely amazing and are on a high level of driving and have been very respectful.

‘Callum [Ilot] gave me a run for my money, it’s been a really tough year. So a big thank you to him as well’.
