Japanese driver Takuma Sato has won the Indianapolis 500 for the second time since moving from Formula 1.

Sato was leading the race, with Scott Dixon just behind him, when with three laps left a crash led to the race having to finish behind the safety car.

Dixon had led for 111 of the 200 laps but Sato took the lead after the final pit stops.

The 43-year-old’s first Indy 500 win came in 2017.

It was not such a good day for Fernando Alonso’s who was 15th with 75 laps to go when he had car issues and ended up finishing 21st.

The double world champion winner at F1 is due to return to the sport in 2021.

Alonso was looking to become only the second man after Graham Hill to win motorsport’s ‘triple crown’ which consists of the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans 24 Hours and Indy 500.

Sadly Alonso’s dream is on hold as the 39-year-old Spaniard has agreed to return to F1 with Renault for the 2021 and 2022 seasons and their is a clause in his contract that forbids him racing at Indy.

Five-time Indycar champion Dixon finished second with Sato’s Rahal Letterman team-mate Graham Rahal finishing third.
